Art To Benefit Nature: Local Art Exhibit to Celebrate Nature and Raffle Print to Benefit Land Trust

The Whidbey Camano Land Trust invites you to support its local, grass roots effort to protect Camano Island’s natural habitats and rural lands. Working with Gallery by the Bay in Stanwood, the Land Trust offers an exciting extra to encourage new membership during the month of February. Gallery by the Bay has gifted the Land Trust with a beautiful print done by celebrated Washington artist, Lori Vonderhorst. All new members to the Land Trust during February and current members who “bring a friend to membership” will have their names entered in a drawing for this art piece.

Opening Reception

Join Land Trust staff and board members at the opening reception on Saturday, February 9 from 5 pm to 8 pm. The Land Trust will have an informational display there through the end of the month.

Gallery by the Bay’s Natural Habitats art exhibit runs between February 9 and 29. Enjoy artwork by several Washington artisits that celebrates birds and nature and learn more about the work of the Land Trust.

Powell To Teach on Habitat Protection at Sound Waters University, Saturday, Feb. 2

Look for the Land Trust booth Saturday, Feb. 2, at the one-day Sound Waters University in Coupeville. Executive director, Pat Powell, is among more than 50 instructors who will present classes on a wide range of subjects relating to habitat and natural resources at this huge educational event organized by WSU Beach Watchers of Island County.

The event is held on the campus of Coupeville middle and high schools, and annually attracts hundreds of attendees from a multi-county area. Powell’s class, scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., is on Permanently Protecting Natural Habitats in Island County.

Delivering the keynote at 9 a.m. will be David Dicks, director of the Puget Sound Partnership. He will speak on “A Bold New Approach to Saving Puget Sound.”

Online registration opens Wednesday, Jan. 2, at www.island.wsu.edu and continues through Jan. 18. Registration for the full day, including keynote address, three classes, snacks and coffee, is $35. Doors open at 8 a.m. An optional box lunch may also be purchased.

Now in its 14th year, the 2008 event will offer attendees any three of more than 50 classes on subjects ranging from salmon, crab, shellfish and sea birds to bluffs, estuaries, orcas, kelp, tidal energy, septic systems, ground water and wells. Classes are taught by authors, educators, enthusiasts and government officials.
