Capital Budget Approved; Land Programs Funded

Great news! On April 21, the Washington State House and Senate approved the capital budget. They provided $214 million for the WWRP and TLT programs. That’s $3 million more than requested!

We want to thank Island County legislators, Mary Margaret Haugen and Representatives Chris Strow and Barbara Bailey, who supported fully funding these programs and all of you who made legislative contacts.

More information about WWRP & TLT

WWRP (Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program) – $100 Million for Parks, Wildlife & Working Farms

The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program funds river corridor and wildlife habitat, farmland protection and recreation projects throughout Washington. $100 million or more is needed to fund 133 excellent projects. You can view proposed project lists and information at wildliferecreation.org.

If funded, five WWRP grants totaling $2.52 million will be awarded for land conservation in Island County.

TLT (Trust Land Transfer program) – $111 Million for Wildlife Habitat and School Construction

The Trust Land Transfer Program is a way to protect irreplaceable habitat and recreation lands owned by the state while still providing revenue for school construction. As the Legislature must appropriate money for schools anyway, spending that money through the TLT program benefits those schools AND native species. $111 million is needed to fund 35 transfers.

If funded, eight TLT properties, totaling 291 acres will be transferred and permanently protected in Island County. These properties have significant wildlife habitat, mature forest and aquifer protection values.
