PROJECT STORY

Krueger Farm – a birthday present to the Town of Coupeville
Nestled inside the historic town of Coupeville, there still remains a stand of forest, open space and fields where part of the old Krueger Farm once lay. Coupeville is the only town within the Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, and changes within town are carefully monitored by residents and guided by the Town in order to maintain its historical and rural character.

In 2003, as Coupeville celebrated its 150th birthday, the Town administration, Whidbey Camano Land Trust and local citizens worked concurrently to save 17 acres of open space at the old Krueger Farm. Using density transfer, the Town worked with the landowner to achieve donation of 12½ acres to the Town of Coupeville for permanent open space. At the same time, the Whidbey Camano Land Trust negotiated a purchase option agreement with the same landowner. This gave the Friends of Krueger Farm time to raise funds to purchase 4½ additional, adjacent acres and attach a conservation easement held by the Land Trust. All this ensured the permanent protection of open space and wildlife habitat for future generations.

The forest and open space provide an important noise, wind and scenic buffer for the town as well as habitat for birds and animals. Trails traverse the protected property, allowing visitors and residents alike to enjoy the beauty of Whidbey Island. Saving this land helped preserve the town’s rural character and maintains the natural connection between the town and Ebey’s Reserve. And, it meant that Coupeville residents continue to have a forest heartland they can call their own – a fitting birthday present indeed.
