Beach Seining at Dugualla BayThe Whidbey Camano Land Trust and the Dugualla Heights Community invite you to see how fish biologists and volunteers collect data about small fish in nearshore habitats. This work is part of an effort to restore juvenile salmon habitat to the Dugualla Heights neighborhood.  This unusual opportunity provides the public with a first-hand look at what kinds of fish can be found along the beach.

Wearing waders and warm clothes under their waterproof jackets, researchers will spread a fine net along a section of beach in a process called beach seining. They pull in the net, and then identify and measure the fish they caught before releasing them back into the bay.   This year’s seining is for a pre-restoration baseline study, which is part of complex, multi-year restoration effort.

Directions:

From Hwy 20, turn east on E. Frostad Rd. Make a left turn onto Dugualla Road where Frostad Rd makes a right turn and becomes Taylor Rd.  There is a sign there for the Dugualla Bay Heights neighborhood. Continue on Dugualla Road to the bottom of the hill and then look for signs that will direct you to the beach seining location.
