Beach View Farm Trail Offers Easy Walking
The Land Trust has officially opened its Beach View Farm Trail on North Whidbey. Enjoy easy walking and great scenery including a historic working farm, wetlands, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Olympic Mountains. It’s also a birder’s delight — perfect for people of all ages and abilities. Please note that it’s only for walking. No dogs are allowed to keep farm animals safe and serene.
Located on the northwest edge of Oak Harbor, Beach View Trail is a farm-to-wetland-to-beach adventure. The first mile showcases the 315-acre farm and forest property owned and operated by the Fakkemas since 1950. It is now protected with a permanent conservation easement held by the Land Trust. The next half-mile of trail, owned by Island County, is adjacent to Swantown Lake. Once you safely cross West Beach Road, you’ll be on a public beach. Or start at the beach and head to the farm!
“It’s overwhelming to see this project come together,” exclaimed County Commissioner Jill Johnson. “First it was the preservation of this historic family farm and forest. And now the new trail connects the Oak Harbor community to the western shore of the island. The partnerships on this project have been impressive and will enhance the island experience for generations to come.“
Funding for the conservation easement was provided by Island County and the U.S. Navy. Trail development was paid for by County Conservation Futures Funds and the Whidbey Camano Land Trust. The Land Trust maintains and manages the trail with the help of dedicated volunteers.
